This piece of historical fiction By G.A Henty is set during the time of Hannibal ( 220-204 B.C ). Hannibal was the greatest general and statesman of Carthage, an ancient North African city. This story tells of what is known as the Second Punic War. In the beginning of the book Malchus, the main character, and his father with two cousins are on a lion hunt and Malchus kills his first lion. When Malchus and his father go to Spain to join his cousin Hannibal, they fight with the Libyans and Malchus has two marvelous escapes from the Libyans and the wolves. Then Hannibal launches a campaign against Rome. They cross the Alps and defeat the Romans in Gaul, which is now France and then march across the Alpines and defeat the Romans again and again. But treachery at home keeps Hannibal from winning final victory and in the end he is defeated and returns to Carthage. This book is an exciting, well written book. It has historical facts and it is fun to read. This is a must read if you like exciting books. G.A. Henty has written hundreds of books like this one and is known as the boys' historian.
